Where it all started
I always loved drawing, since I was a kid and I just wanted to tell you a little tale about the start of my art story.
It is a bit hard to say where exactly it started. But it must have been around 30 years ago. I just loved to draw. Unfortunately I don’t have any drawings of my early years with me anymore. Some might still float around somewhere in the house I grew up in. But I am not totally sure. And that house is in Austria, and I am in Bangkok while I am writing this. So not really around the corner.
But fear not. I still have some old drawings of my teenage years on my hard drive and I am not ashamed to show them. Because I just loved to draw when I was young. And yeah I wasn’t exactly Picasso, but I loved it. I probably didn’t have the most talent in the world but that certainly didn’t stop me.
The school Years
Time to show off… and yeah you can laugh now. I do too.

But it just puts a smile on my face when I look at these old drawings and I think where I have come from and how much I have developed. I must have been somewhere around 10 – 15 when I did that drawing. Guess you can tell that I liked animes and… well ladies.
I drew a lot back then. When others were playing with toy guns and bow and arrow outside, shooting each other in the leg and pulling each others hair I was in my room. Because there the light was best and I would just draw. Ladies, Spiderman and He-Man.
Let me show you another one.

This one was my first Photoshop experiment. When Photoshop wasn’t what Photoshop is today. And I definitely had no Idea how to use it. I tried to paint it with a mouse. Because there was no such thing as a drawing tablet or iPad for another 15 years. But I still remember how I drew that. I made the original with ink on paper. Of course. That’s how you would do it. Then I scanned it. Loaded it into Photoshop and traced it with my mouse. Sounds like a hassle right? Well… you got to get creative at times.
I also found this one on my hard drive.

I never really did a lot of portraits back then. Actually I still don’t do portraits today. But for some time when I must have been close to 20 I had a period of time where I tried to draw a couple of portraits. I don’t remember why I wanted to do it. Maybe I was just in love with Keira Knightley back then. But this one is probably my best try. Of course its not perfect. But I still kind of like how it turned out.
At the Military
So I really was drawing a lot during my High School years. Even when I went to the military, where I was on Guard duty all night some days. I pulled my pencil and some paper out and got going.

I still like this drawing until today and I am happy that I still have it. Definitely comes with a bit of nostalgia and brings up some crazy stories from the military. For example that one day, when one of the Vice Lieutenant was mowing the grass around a little pond they had in the barracks where I was stationed. At some point he moved backwards, towards the pond. And of course he slipped and fell into the water with the lawn mower still in his hands. I think since then everybody called him Vice Lieutenant Lawn Mower. The good old days.
Well enough of that stuff.
Moving to Vienna
Because after military I almost totally stopped drawing. I moved to the capital city of Austria, to Vienna and started to study Theatre-, Film- and Media studies. I did some little drawings here and there like this one.

But nothing major anymore. My skills were slightly getting better but I also just stopped. I had a lot of work to do for University. Lots of exams. And of course when you’re early twenty and you live in an exciting city other things get more interesting than sitting at home drawing cartoons. You know the usual thing… alcohol, parties, girls. Well… the good old days.
Around that time I also kinda stopped drawing. And it took about 15 years until I picked up that pencil and paper again, and of course my new drawing tablet.
But that’s a story for another time.
I hope you liked this little tale from my story (if you’re still reading).
Thank you very much! I certainly appreciate it.
Cheers
